Rome is a must-see city. There is so much history and culture packed in this Italian city that I guarantee everyone will find something they love about it. Whether it’s touring the Colosseum, the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain, taking in a museum, or just enjoying the amazing Italian food and indulging yourself in gelato, Rome has a lot to offer. One place you need to see when you visit Rome is the Vatican and St. Peter’s Basilica. This small city-state is located in the middle of Rome and is one of the most beautiful and inspiring places I’ve ever experienced.
St. Peter’s Basilica is the church located within Vatican City. It is one of the world’s largest churches and is an amazing piece of Renaissance architecture. The details are spectacular. It took more than 100 years for the church to be completed after its groundbreaking in 1506. Just standing outside of the church is enough to make a trip to Italy worth it. You almost feel like you are in the center of the world. Then you walk inside the church and your mind starts to race. I spent a lot of time in a prayer room, just sitting and trying to take everything in.
I wrote in my journal after visiting, “I don’t even want to try to explain what it looked like and what I felt when I walked in. I cannot give it justice. The beauty, the art, the gold, the everything. It was breathtaking and amazing. I felt very overwhelmed.” It was hard to find the words to describe the Vatican and St. Peter’s Basilica back then and it’s still hard to find the words now.
