There aren’t many Eastern European restaurants in Seattle, but just because there are limited options doesn’t mean there aren’t great places to go. One of our favorite spots for Eastern European food is Piroshki Cafe and Bakery.

Piroshki Cafe and Bakery is better known by its locations around Seattle: Piroshki on Madison and Piroshki on 3rd. They’re pretty easy to spot, especially around lunchtime. That’s because there’s typically a line out the door waiting for tasty piroshki.

Piroshki Cafe and Bakery

As described by the Piroshki Cafe and Bakery website, piroshki are “small baked or fried turnovers or dumplings with savory meat, vegetable or fruit filling.” The options almost seem endless at Piroshki Cafe and Bakery. You can order broccoli and cheese, beef and cabbage, smoked turkey breast and cheese, smoked salmon and cream cheese, and many, many more. You can take piroshki on the go or you can make a full, sit down meal out of it.

The piroshki at Piroshki Cafe and Bakery are the real deal, too. When we visited Piroshki on 3rd, the woman behind the counter had a thick Eastern European accent. She told us that two women come in everyday at 4am to start making all the piroshki by hand. Piroshki on 3rd opens at 6:30am and closes at 6pm Monday-Friday. According to the employee, they usually sell out of everything throughout the day and they keep making them in the back to keep up with demand. In other words, the piroshki are always fresh.

On top of piroshki, Piroshki Cafe and Bakery also serves authentic Eastern European pastries (like vatrushka and baklava), soups (prepared daily from scratch), salads, and more. They also serve breakfast and lunch specials (served after 11am), including pierogi (one of my personal favorites), pelmeni, beef stroganoff (Monday/Thursday), and chicken schnitzel (Friday), among others.

If you’re in the mood for Eastern European food in Seattle, you don’t have to look far. With two locations and plenty of great options on the menu, this is the perfect place to cure your craving.
