We all know Seattle is considered by many a coffee epicenter. And while it’s nearly true you’ll find a Starbucks on every street corner, Seattle also has some independent treasures deserving attention. One of my favorites is El Diablo Coffee Company located on Queen Anne. El Diablo Coffee specializes in Cuban coffee and makes one of my favorite cups of coffee in all of Seattle.

El Diablo Coffee

On its website, El Diablo Coffee (1811 Queen Anne Avenue North #101) states it’s the only Latin style coffee coffee shop in all of Seattle. The first thing you’ll notice is their two menus: Seattle and Cuban. The Seattle menu lists all of the traditional coffee drinks you’ll find at any regular Seattle coffee shop. The Cuban menu lists coffee drinks made with Cuban espresso, including a Cubano, Cortadito, Cafe con Leche, and Mexican Hot Chocolate. Cuban coffee refers to an espresso shot that is sweetened with brown sugar during the brewing process. I typically order a Cafe con Leche when I’m at El Diablo Coffee; it is similar to a latte.

I prefer not to add sweetener or flavored syrups to my coffee because I enjoy tasting the actual flavor of the coffee beans, so I was a little concerned trying Cuban coffee for the first time. And I feared the brown sugar would hurt my taste buds, but I had nothing to worry about. The brown sugar is just enough to add extra flavor, but doesn’t over power the coffee.

To complement the Cuban Coffee, El Diablo Coffee also offers Cuban food. Tim and I especially favor their empanadas, which are stuffed pastries that are either baked or fried. My favorite is the ham, cheese and onion empanada. It is super gooey and the ham is cooked just right. Think Hot Pocket but much more glorious. Tim loves the pork empanada, which is also stuffed with jalapeño and onions. We both agree the pork has an enjoyable smokey flavor. El Diablo Coffee also serves Cuban soups and sandwiches.

El Diablo Coffee

I’ve visited El Diablo Coffee a few different times and I’m still learning the menu. Luckily, the staff is super friendly and personable. They are more than willing to explain the Cuban offerings and answer any questions, and the baristas are always making conversation as they brew coffee.

I also really enjoy the vibe — comfy indoor and covered outdoor seating with big and small tables. I always see people typing away at their laptops or visiting with their friends. Murals of the devil (hence the name ‘El Diablo’) and other characters are painted in bright, bold colors on the tables and walls. This fun, South American inspired decor makes El Diablo Coffee a really fun place to hang out for a bit.

Not only is the Cuban coffee great but the atmosphere and service is really fun and friendly. My dad first introduced me to this coffee shop and each visit has been a very pleasant experience. Whether you’re looking for a coffee to go, or a place to hang out for bit, El Diablo Coffee is one of the best coffee shops in Seattle.
