I’ve had some great chicken wings in my life. In fact, I’ve devoured wings at Anchor Bar in Buffalo, New York — where the things actually started (hence the name “Buffalo wings”). Sometimes you just get a craving for hot wings, like we did the other night. Seattle isn’t known for awesome wings, so I turned to Yelp to find the right place. After some research, we decided to try WingMasters Sports Bar in Ballard.
WingMasters (5811 24th Ave. N.W.) is like any sports bar across the country. There are old softball trophies, college memorabilia and posters plastered to the wall. There are several televisions that can be seen from every different angle, so you can watch whatever game is on from any seat in the house. There are also a couple of dart boards, pool tables, a pin ball machine and even a buck hunter video game in the back. But, the biggest draw at WingMasters isn’t the atmosphere — it’s the food.

Before I get to the hot wings, I need to talk about the cheese sticks at WingMasters Sports Bar. I read about how “huge” the cheese sticks are on Yelp, so Tove and I had to try them. The cheese sticks lived up to the hype. They’re gooey, delicious, and MASSIVE. The cheese sticks are so big at WingMasters, they’re actually called cheese logs.
There are several different chicken wing flavors at WingMasters Sports Bar. They range from mild to medium to hot. Among the choices are Teriyaki, Sweet ‘n Hot, Atomic Blazin’ and many more. You can order wings in sets of 6, 12, 18, 24 and 50 (the more you order, the cheaper the price per wing). Tove and I wanted to try four different flavors in a set of 24 (separated into six of each flavor), but we were told they can only split large orders in half (so 12 of one flavor and 12 of another flavor in a set of 24). That was a little disappointing, but we worked our way around it.
Apricot Jalapeno wings
Tove and I wound up ordering 18 Authentic Buffalo and Apricot Jalapeno wings (split 9 and 9), and we also ordered 6 Garlic Parmesan chicken wings. It was a little more expensive that way, but Tove and I really wanted to try more than two flavors at WingMasters. The Authentic Buffalo was my favorite, while Tove liked the Apricot Jalapeno best.
If you’re looking for a good deal on wings — WingMasters Sports Bar is your place. Every Wednesday (from 6pm-11pm), they offers wings for just $.5o apiece, and chicken wings are half price every Monday-Friday during happy hour (from 4pm-6pm).
