It’s no secret there are great views of Seattle from Queen Anne Hill. Tourists and locals flood Kerry Park on a sunny day to breathe in the city skyline and Mt. Rainier. But little do many people know (especially tourists), there’s another spectacular view right down the street (just .3 miles away) at Marshall Park.
Instead of featuring the Seattle skyline like Kerry Park, Marshall Park (located on the corner of W. Highland Dr. and 8th Pl. W.) showcases everything else that makes our city so amazing. You can enjoy a panoramic view of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains. It’s a pretty spectacular sight on a clear day in Seattle.
Marshall Park really only exists for its view, and that’s the way it’s always been. According to the city’s website, “In 1909 Marshall Park — then known as Phelps Place — was used largely as a sightseeing point by pleasure vehicles.” I recently met a woman who says she prefers the view from Marshall Park over Kerry Park. She grew up on the water in Southern California, and the view from Marshall Park brings back some “great memories” for her.
Marshall Park is tiny (only .78 of an acre), and you won’t find much else there aside from the awesome view. There isn’t a playground, basketball courts, or anything like that, there are just three benches that look out on the water (which I think is technically called Betty Bowen Viewpoint). In front of the benches, you’ll find artwork cast into the concrete by famous Seattle artists. And on a sunny day, you’ll see people drop a blanket on the grass to soak up some rays.
Kerry Park gets all the attention on Queen Anne (for good reason), but you shouldn’t miss Marshall Park on a clear day. To offer even more incentive to check out the park, you can also visit Parsons Garden, which is located kitty-corner from the park. And, you can also stroll down historic Queen Anne Boulevard (the 3.7 mile loop passes right by the park). If you’re looking for a park with a cool view and a playground, then you should stop by Ward Springs Park (only a mile away from Marshall Park). Needless to say, there are plenty of options on Queen Anne Hill.
