There are some great Reuben sandwiches in Seattle, but the 74th Street Ale House Red Reuben Sandwich has to be in the conversation for best Reuben in town.

Foursquare has already crowned the 74th Street Ale House Red Reuben Sandwich the king of Emerald City’s Reubens. It’s ranked No. 2 on their list of the top 15 Reuben sandwiches in Seattle (just behind Market House Meats). Plus, it shows up on several other lists of the city’s best.

Here’s how 74th Street Ale House describes its Red Reuben Sandwich:

Boar’s Head brand lean corned beef, braised in Blackthorn hard cider, sliced and piled high on rye bread with our freshly made red pickled cabbage, melted Swiss cheese and house-made Thousand Island dressing. The Reuben is then grilled golden brown, baked in the oven and served hot.

So here’s the deal: the 74th Street Ale House Red Reuben Sandwich isn’t a “traditional” Reuben. Instead of sauerkraut, this tasty sandwich features red pickled cabbage. With that said, the Red Reuben Sandwich still has great Reuben flavor. The house-made Thousand Island dressing is also a really nice bonus.

As longtime Seattle food writer/critic/commentator Nancy Leson once wrote about the 74th Avenue Ale House Red Reuben Sandwich:

“That sandwich was amazing, thanks, in large part, to its considerable crunch. As you can see, it’s a glorious golden brown. Butter? Yeah, baby. And the not-so-secret sauce had a little kick (Tabasco, I was told). As Jack Sprat’s wife, I much prefer the schmaltzy piece of everything — the fatty ends of a caramelized hunk of corned beef, say. So the use here of (forgive them, father, for they have sinned) lean Boar’s Head corned beef would normally turn me off. But at the Ale Houses, where that lean beef is braised in beer till it’s surprisingly tender, it just added a certain goyish charm. Plus, I loved the crunchy pickled red cabbage subbing for the kraut.”

Let’s just say there’s no shortage of praise for this sandwich.
